International Researchers: Better Ways to Vote – Selecting Acceptable Compromises

On 14 May 2025, behavioural economist Prof. Dr Carlos Alós-Ferrer (Lancaster University) will deliver an online public lecture on how alternative voting methods can lead to fairer decisions and reduce polarisation. He will show how improved ways of voting may help prevent extreme election outcomes and promote socially desirable compromises.

Democratic societies are increasingly faced with knife-edge election outcomes – with far-reaching consequences for social cohesion, political trust, and institutional stability. But why do reasonable compromises often fail to gain traction, even when they are both socially and economically desirable?

In this public lecture, Prof. Dr Carlos Alós-Ferrer argues that the root of the issue may lie not just in polarizsed societies – but in the voting methods themselves.

Drawing on a series of laboratory and online experiments, he demonstrates how the mechanics of different voting procedures influence decision-making. The key findings:

  • Commonly used methods tend to foster egoistic choices.
  • In contrast, more nuanced alternatives promote equity, compromise, and efficiency – and help avoid extreme outcomes.

Key Questions & Focus Areas

This lecture offers exclusive insights into cutting-edge research at the intersection of psychology, economics, and political decision-making:

  • What impact do voting procedures have on political outcomes?
  • Why do societies fail to select compromises even when they are available?
  • How do alternative voting methods work – and what are their potential benefits?

We look forward to your participation!
